A rod mill is a type of grinding mill in which the grinding media loaded within the cylindrical shell consist of steel rods. Under the influence of centrifugal and frictional forces, these grinding rods reduce the material to a suitable particle size. This design offers energy efficiency, uniform discharge, and high throughput; typically, it employs a wet overflow configuration and is utilized for primary open-circuit grinding.
Rod mills are widely utilized for grinding operations in the production of artificial sand and gravel, as well as in mineral processing plants, chemical factories, and the power sector. They are applied to materials such as iron ore, copper ore, gold ore, quartz, feldspar, limestone, gypsum, steel slag, blast furnace slag, and coal gangue.

The mill cylinder is driven to rotate either through a speed-reducing transmission—utilizing a motor, a reducer, and a large peripheral gear—or directly by a low-speed synchronous motor via a large peripheral gear transmission. Under the influence of centrifugal and frictional forces, the grinding media within the cylinder are lifted to a certain height before cascading down in a parabolic trajectory or a sliding motion. The material to be ground continuously enters the cylinder through the feed port, where it is pulverized by the moving grinding media; the finished product is then discharged from the machine—driven by the combined forces of overflow and continuous feeding—to proceed to the next stage of processing.
Saves over 40% more energy compared to traditional equipment, thereby reducing operating costs.
During the sand-making process, the proportion of medium-grade sand is high, and the particle size distribution exhibits excellent continuity.
Utilizing a linear-contact collision mechanism, material that has already been crushed is not subjected to secondary crushing, thereby preventing over-pulverization.
