The material undergoes preliminary compaction by a pre-compression screw to achieve a specific density; it is then force-fed through an inlet and directed between two press rollers. The surfaces of these rollers feature corresponding hemispherical cavities arranged in a checkerboard pattern. With the rollers positioned horizontally, the material is drawn into the gap between them and compressed into a continuous strip of formed balls. The extrusion process ceases at the plane of the rollers' central axes; as the rollers continue to rotate, the pressure decreases. Consequently, the formed balls undergo slight elastic expansion, causing them to detach from the walls of the cavities and facilitating their smooth release from the mold.
